Volcanoes are studied by a group of people called Volcanologists. They monitor the active volcanoes to help minimise damage by detecting warning signs is which volcanoes produce when about to erupt. Some of these warning signs include mini earthquakes as the magma is rising upwards to the crust. The Volcanologists use a scientific instrument called a seismometer. A Seismometer is a part of the seismograph which is used to measure the motion of the ground. One way could be by the increase of temperature and you can tell by thermal cameras or satellite. Another way is when the volcano is about to erupt It may release gases. The volcanologists may use chemical sensors which could determine if the gases are deadly.
To minimise damage from a volcano you should seal up any storm drains or lock away any machinery because if ash falls it will block the drains and damage or break the machines. It would be best to lower the amount of travel. To prevent ash getting into the body use a filter mask or a wet cloth. Learn the evacuation procedures. Make sure you have emergency supplies to support yourself and others. Make sure there is enough for a few days. Food and water are critical. A massive thing you can do to save lives in to communicate and co-operate. |
